Puglia’s Fiery Pizzica

SALENTO’S PIZZICA IS the sort of music you can feel in the very dirt of the place.

Like the blues of the Mississippi delta, the musical form — baked under the cruel sun of this extreme southeastern limb of Italy — took root in the fields. It was a tautly-wound, fiercely upbeat musical release valve from the inescapable pressures of a life of hard work, under a rigid social system.

Like the blues, the pizzica has a myth surrounding its creation: nothing so concrete as the devil at the crossroads, but several centuries more ancient. The music was viewed as the means to heal the bite of the taranta, a legendary spider who bit workers — especially women and most often during the months of harvest — and whose exorcism required multiple hours-long sessions of trance-induced ritual dancing. Traditional accomodations in Puglia: Trulli

When the plans were being made for a 30-day trip through Italy this spring, one thing was agreed upon quickly – there would be no five-star or chain hotels. We would spend our nights in bed and breakfasts, apartments, trulli and castles. Thirty nights later we left Italy with two places indelibly etched in our memories – a 300-year-old trullo in the southeastern region of Puglia. Going to a country as ancient as Italy and staying in modern hotels just doesn’t make sense. The rich and famous may be too snobby to experience the history of Italy, but for real people, why not stay in accommodations owned and run by local people and get to sample some of the authentic culture?   Go on reading this entry »

Living in Puglia

ianclaire

We are Ian, Claire and Pampoen!

We moved to Puglia just over a year ago after six years in London.  Ian is orignially from South Africa and I am from Scotland but now we have chosen to make Puglia our home.  We had a contruction company in London and have been working on property renovation and construction for over 10 years in total now.

We bought an old house and have spent the last year working to renovate it, just the two of us! Crazy, it sounds, but fantastic fun I assure you!  We have learnt that there is more to living in Italy than just sunshine and wine, the local people are Go on reading this entry »

Puglia: Cantele wines conquer the world

Moncton may be a small wine market by international standards, but award-winning Italian winemaker Gianni Cantele is impressed enough by the depth of wine knowledge here that he has decided to detour from his current U.S. promotional tour to make the city his sole Canadian stop.

The bad news is word of mouth means Cantele’s five-course wine dinner at Pastalli’s restaurant tonight is already sold out and there’s a waiting list to boot. The good news is that Metro’s World Wine and Food Expo has been spawning a number of events like this through educating people in the region about wine.
immagine-4Gianni Cantele admits there might be just something else about our region that has changed his travel plans too. “I’ll eat almost anything but I’m particularly fond of lobster and I know that your region is a world leader. “I’m going to enjoy a feast while I’m here,” he said.
The wines from the Cantele family are not well known in many markets. New Brunswick is the only place in Atlantic Canada where you can find them, but the international press has recently begun raving.
Three of their wines, ranging in price from $10 to $15, are available at many NB Liquor stores and this province is fast becoming the top market in Canada for Cantele wines.
Unfortunately, the wines are sold out at some NB Liquor locations, but more should be arriving by the end of the month.
The wines, from Italy’s Puglia region, “are a surprise,” says local sommelier Bill Vance. “Great flavour and depth and outstanding value, which is not typically expected from Italy.
“His latest vintages have rated between 88 and 92 points by some of the world’s best known wine writers which are very high scores for $15 wines.”
